ADAM BRIMO

Founder & Chief Executive Officer

Adam holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Software) and a Bachelor Arts (Politics) degrees from UNSW (University of New South Wales), is the 2011 Choice Magazine Consumer Activist of the Year and is a recipient of the 2011 UNSW Alumni Graduand Award. Adam completed his honours thesis at UNSW in partnership with National ICT Australia (NICTA).

Adam previously worked at Macquarie Bank as a Software Engineer in the Fixed Income, Currencies and Commodities Group and at Westpac Institutional Bank as a Senior Software Engineer. In 2010-2011, Adam led the successful Vodafail consumer activist campaign, which resulted in nationwide media coverage, an ACMA inquiry and a $1bn network upgrade for Vodafone’s Australian business.

In 2012, Adam joined world renowned UNSW Prof Richard Buckland and David Collien to found OpenLearning.com, a social learning platform. Over one million students have joined courses, including the first massive open online courses (MOOCs) from Australia and Malaysia, where it is the national MOOC platform for public universities and polytechnics.

OpenLearning now employs 65 people and is headquartered in Sydney with its Southeast Asia head office in Kuala Lumpur. In recognition of the impact OpenLearning has had on the education sector in Asia, Adam was named one of the Forbes 30 under 30 Asia in the Consumer Technology category in early 2017.

DAVID COLLIEN

Founder & Chief Technology Officer

David was previously an education PhD researcher at the University of New South Wales, and is a talented software engineer with first class honours in a Bachelor of Science (Computing) degree. David’s current research focuses on the analysis of the pedagogical and motivational aspects of community in online learning environments.

David spent 6 years at UNSW as a tutor, high school outreach coordinator, guest lecturer, and course design assistant. David is also experienced in artificial intelligence having done research with NICTA, and been a member of UNSW’s RoboCup team rUNSWift. He has also previously worked in the e-learning field as a researcher, pedagogical liaison, and developer with the UNSW Adaptive eLearning Research Group and Smart Sparrow, and gives talks on software engineering in startups at Muru-D. David also expresses his creativity as an artist, with an installation in the 2015 Sydney Vivid Light Walk.

BROOKE HAHN

Chief Learning Officer

Brooke has a Master of Teaching from the University of Sydney as well as a Psychology (Honours) degree from the University of Wollongong.

She has taught using a student-centred approach in primary schools, higher education classrooms and now in her online course design. Brooke has worked with a number of key clients to design and develop courses, including the Australian and Malaysian governments, universities and large organisations and has taught workshops on how to design effective online courses.

When she isn’t teaching or heading up OpenLearning’s Learning Design team, Brooke is likely at the gym or training martial art.

HUAT KOH

Head of Finance

Huat holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree from the University of New South Wales. He previously worked in senior finance roles in various corporates with presence in Asia and Australasia, including as finance head at Parkson Retail Asia Limited (listed in Singapore) and Mulpha International Bhd (listed in Malaysia). When he isn’t at OpenLearning’s finance desk, Huat is likely spending time traveling with his family.

CHERIE DIAZ

Managing Director Australia

Cherie is a lifelong learner who holds a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Teaching from the Australian Catholic University, a Master of Arts in Modern History from Macquarie University, a Master of Education from the University of Technology Sydney; and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD).

Her 15 years of experience in education spans a range of levels and modes. Prior to joining OpenLearning, Cherie was the Head of Education Delivery at the Australian Institute of Company Directors where she led faculty engagement, education delivery, Director CPD, and lifelong learning.

Between 2012 – 2017, Cherie oversaw student delivery of some of Australia’s largest private colleges. As Director, Customer Success at Scentia, Cherie led the operational teams for the four colleges that included B2B, B2C, and B2G delivery for non-accredited courses, vocational and higher education qualifications. As Head of College and registered CEO of the Australian Institute of Applied Sciences, a Study Group college; Cherie enabled a regeneration of the brand, and managed their transition to online learning.

Cherie is dedicated to building experiences that put the learner at the centre of the design and delivery process. Having led education innovation programs for Ivy College and the Australian Institute of Management, Cherie’s efforts in driving the evolution of education quality resulted in individual and business awards for service excellence by the Customer Service Institute of Australia.

Joining the team in 2018, Cherie is enjoying the opportunity to leverage her experience as an educator, organisational development advocate, and operational executive to partner with users of OpenLearning.

DANIAL RAHMAN

Head of Comms & Strategic Initiatives

An Oxford University trained lawyer, Danial’s passion for education and technology led him on this journey to provide access to quality education globally. Previously attached to Malaysia’s Education and Higher Education Ministries, he believes in the power of education to shape future generations for the better.

Danial is also a columnist for Malaysian English newspaper, The Star, having written over the last four years on a range of topics encompassing education, technology and leadership. You can check out his writings here: What’s Your Status by Danial Rahman.

SARVEEN KANDIAH

Managing Director Malaysia

Sarveen holds a B. Science (Finance) from Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business and has previously held positions as Manager at CIMB Group and VP Investments at Malayan Traders Capital.

Sarveen was appointed as MD Malaysia in May 2019. He joined OpenLearning in 2017 as Head of Partnerships and established the sales and partnerships teams in Malaysia. With a background in investment banking, Sarveen has worked closely with government, academic and TVET institutions, as well as corporations at all levels. Having been front and center in OpenLearning Malaysia’s growth over the last two years, Sarveen will set the strategy for the next level of growth and will be leading its implementation, as well as guiding our Malaysian team forward.
